Local Area

The Elk Valley:

Spanning B.C, the Flathead and into Alberta this area of the Rockies is characterized by the Lizard Range, mountain peaks, clear lakes, pristine rivers and waterfalls. The Elk Valley is in the East Kootenays, in the southeastern corner of B.C. It is home to endless backcountry adventures, plenty of Forest Service Roads (FSR’s) through spectacular terrain where mountain goats clinging to craggy cliffs and herds of elk roaming through wildflower meadows are common sights. Fernie is in the heart of this area and is a hip community offering everything a visitor could ask for, including vibrant arts and culture. Fernie is a must for motorcycle touring.

Singletrack dirt bike trails are located at Koocanusa, 40 minutes west of Fernie near Elko B.C. There are over 70km of mapped single track here.

Local parts suppliers are available in town - Ghostrider Motorsports, Canadian Tire, Napa, Fernie Auto parts and RPM in Blairmore, AB.

Location:

Fernie is surrounded by the Canadian Rocky Mountains and close to the Purcell and Selkirk ranges. It is a 3 hour drive from Calgary AB, 4 hours from Banff AB, 2 hours from Kalispell MT, 1 hour from Cranbrook BC and 11 hours from Vancouver, BC. Crowsnest Pass is only a 40 minute drive east of Fernie. Elkford is the ‘end of the road’ in BC and the beginning of the backroads over into Kananaskis.

Stay & Dine:

Every style of accommodation can be found in Fernie, visitors can choose from budget to luxury, in town, close to town or at Fernie Alpine Resort. There’s hotel, motel, hostel, B&B, condo, townhome chalet or camping. It is a good idea to try to plan ahead as accommodations fill up during the peak summer season. We have selected a few accommodators who we recommend, some are more unique and support riding in the Elk Valley, reflected by discounts offered to our members.

Fernie cuisine offers a tour around the world! Visitors can chose from Indian, sushi, Mexican, Mediterranean, South American, Steak, burgers, pasta, pizza. Dine in, take away, food trucks, coffee shops and fast food drive throughs. We have selected a few of our favourites, warning many restaurants will not take reservations.

Local watering holes are also plentiful with a good number of pubs, bars with outside patios. The local Fernie Brewery offers tastings and the Distillery in town offers a tasty drinks menu made in house.

Tourism Fernie website has endless information & suggestions. Riders can also email us for ideas.
